The Division of Technical Services is responsible for enterprise storage, Windows, UNIX, Linux and virtual server platforms, as well as enterprise system software, operating system support and data management.
The Division of Technical Servers consists of four Branches:
Database Administration Branch
The Database Administration Branch provides database management for mainframe and distributed systems databases running on physical and virtual server platforms. Services provided by the Database Administration Branch include all aspects of database management including designing and maintaining the databases with an Enterprise focus, specifically installing, configuring, patching, upgrading, migrating, performing database backups and recoveries, performance tuning, and administering database security.
Database Administrators support databases across the Commonwealth under the following platforms:
- Distributed Databases: DB2/LUW, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server
- Mainframe Databases: DB2 and IMS
Enterprise UNIX and Storage Branch
The Enterprise UNIX and Storage Branch supports UNIX and Linux operating environments and enterprise storage and backups. Services provided by this Branch include upgrades to the operating systems, installation of patches and hot fixes, performance monitoring and service monitoring (hardware and software).
The Enterprise UNIX and Storage Branch consists of two teams:
The Storage/Backup Team supports all aspects of COT enterprise disk storage. Support includes installation, management, monitoring, performance tuning, and troubleshooting/problem resolution. The Storage/Backup Team also creates and provisions units of disk space that are configured to offer the performance characteristics that are appropriate for the designated use. Additionally, the Storage/Backup Team manages the COT enterprise backup solution that includes a highly redundant Virtual Tape Library (VTL) and includes offsite tape storage.
The UNIX Team supports the UNIX and Linux operating system platforms. Support includes hardware and software installation, system and security configuration, upgrades/patch maintenance, and performance monitoring/alerting.
Enterprise Windows and Virtual Server Branch
The Windows Server Branch provides support for Windows Servers and Virtual Server platforms. Services provided include upgrades to the operating systems (Windows, Linux, and hypervisor), installation of necessary patches and hot fixes, and performance tuning and monitoring.
The Enterprise Windows and Virtual Server Branch consists of two teams:
Directory Services Team
The Directory Services Team is responsible for the Commonwealth's Active Directory forests and domains. Additionally, the Directory Services Team manages the Commonwealth's Public Key Infrastructure, Multi-Factor Authentication and Identity and Access Management Infrastructure.
The Virtualization Team manages the components of the Virtual Server Infrastructure including the hardware and hypervisor. This team works with the Windows Team and UNIX Team to support the virtual Windows and Linux servers that reside on the Virtual Server Infrastructure.
The Windows Team supports the Windows operating system on application servers and file and print servers. Server support includes patch management, monitoring (hardware and software) and virus scan file updates.
Systems Software Branch
The Systems Software Branch provides support for off-the-shelf software and enterprise applications. Services provided include installation and upgrades of software applications, installations of patches and hot fixes, and application monitoring and performance tuning.
The Systems Software Branch includes three Teams:
COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) Team
The COTS Team manages commercial off-the-shelf software (COTS) applications. This team maintains the applications and troubleshoots any issues that arise by working with the owner/customer and the manufacturer of the application.
Enterprise Services Team
The enterprise services team provides email, fax-to-desktop and messaging encryption solutions for the Commonwealth. Additionally, the Enterprise Services Team supports the enterprise instant messaging, collaboration and content management infrastructure for the Commonwealth.
