Introduction
The primary goal of the Kentucky Watershed Modeling Information Portal (KWIMP) Project, a $750,000 Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), focused on the creation of an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) compliant portal to support watershed modeling and assessments in Kentucky. Among other sources, the EPA’s Environmental Information Exchange Network (EIEN)
, the Kentucky Division of Geographic Information’s (DGI) web mapping services, and the Kentucky Landscape Snapshot (KLS), provide information utilized by the portal. KWMIP's vision is to provide a one-stop digital, geospatial data portal for all entities performing watershed modeling (with models supported by KWMIP) and assessments over the geography of Kentucky using datasets from their domicile and in their native formats. KWMIP provides training for Commonwealth personnel in the use of the portal and appropriate uses of models in decision-making. KWMIP significantly leverages spatial and time series data and tools that are already available in Kentucky, and the technologies developed for KWMIP will build upon a $4.5 million investment from NASA via the Kentucky Landscape Snapshot (KLS) and Kentucky Landscape Census (KLC). A detailed update of landcover (circa 2001) and analysis of landcover change are the major products resulting from these projects. KWMIP will also leverage other governmental data portals in the Commonwealth.
Benefits
The KWMIP Project will provide users with:
- Online delineation of watershed boundaries
- Ability to select specific data needed for supported models
- Modeled temperature and precipitation
- Rich datasets for spatial data and tabular/time series data
- Ability to locate, compile, clip, project, format and ship data of interest
- Data format & retrieval available for uses other than modeling
